The spot offers panoramic views of the fertile plain of eLIS and the archaeological site.
The elegant and harmonized with the natural environment bioclimatic building that houses the archaeological museum was erected between 2002 and 2004 at the foot of the ancient acropolis of Elis (Kaloskopi hill) in application of the architectural study of the National Technical University of Athens professor Dimitris Biris, and implemented by the architectural office of Anastasios and Dimitris Biris.

the exhibition
The exhibition was organized under the responsibility of the 8th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and was implemented under the direct supervision of archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas, who served as General Director of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture. The project was supported by the scientific personnel of the excavation, research and promotion project of Elis which was in progress.
The inauguration of the Museum took place on March 24, 2004, the same day as the inauguration of the Museums of Ancient Olympia.

Visitors disembark at the parking lot and can either walk or take the elevator on the east side of the museum to the entrance level. The museum’s premises take advantage of the slopes of the hillside and is located at a higher level.
At the level of the museum’s main entrance, the spacious outdoor square welcomes the visitor and offers him an unobstructed, excellent view of the archaeological site on the one hand, and of the entire plain of Ilida up to the medieval castle of Chlemoutsi on the other.
The museum houses the large reception hall, ticket office, three main halls, a corridor and a temporary exhibition hall. On the same level is the inner courtyard where architectural elements and sculptures are exhibited, sanitary facilities, a small shop area and the museum’s operations, security and control room.
The lower level houses the conservation laboratory, antiquities storage facilities, electromechanical facilities, as well as a hall for educational programs end events.
