Nikolaos gialouris

Born in 1916 in Smyrna, archaeologist Nikolaos Gialouris was a tireless researcher and excavator of Elis, with a significant contribution to the archaeology of Ilia region and the wider Western Peloponnese.

THE SYSTEMATIC EXCAVATION OF ELIs WAS A LIFE’S WORK FOR GIALOURIS.

He studied in Athens, Basel, Zurich and Geneva and was awarded a doctorate in 1949. From 1951 he served in the Archaeological Service and contributed to the organization of museums in Ilia, Achaia and Messinia.

He assumed the position of General Inspector of Antiquities and pioneered the re-exhibition of the treasures of Sacred Altis in the New Archaeological Museum of Olympia. He published numerous studies on various monuments, archaeological sites and areas of the Peloponnese.

His publishings of the excavations he had carried out, and further for ancient Greek sculpture and the history of the Olympic Games had a great impact.

He died in 2011 at the age of 93, leaving an indelible mark on archaeology and the cultural heritage.
