Elis in the Cultural Program “All of Greece One Culture 2026”

This year, the Ministry of Culture’s initiative “All of Greece One Culture 2026” is developed around the thematic axis inspired by Menander’s verse from Dyskolos: “Ὡς χαρίεν ἔστ’ ἄνθρωπος, ἂν ἄνθρωπος ᾖ” (How graceful a human being is, when they are truly human).

The program includes a total of 95 new productions spanning music, theater, dance, visual arts, and musical theater. These will be presented across 94 archaeological sites, monuments, and museums in 12 regions of the country (excluding Attica) from July 1st to August 31st, 2026.

As part of this year’s program, the Ancient Theater of Elis will host the theatrical performance Stafidokampos on August 21st and 22nd.

stafidokampos

Drawing inspiration from Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard—where the end of an era meets the fear of an unknown future—“Stafidokampos” shifts the story to the plains of the Ilia Prefecture, a place where memory seems to have drenched the very soil.

The Poulopoulos family returns to their ancestral estate after a long period abroad, only to face financial deadlocks, family secrets, heavy silences, and the imminent threat of selling a land that carries their history and identity. The conflict is not just about losing property; it marks the transition from a fading world to one being born.

Using the symbol of the “currant field” (stafidokampos), the performance explores what roots, home, and homeland mean today. It sheds light on economic and emotional forms of exploitation, the clash between generations and eras, and the deeply human need to hold onto something that seems to be slipping away forever.
