On Friday, 25 September 2026, 32 students from the 3rd Junior High School of Amaliada explored archaeological research through a hands-on educational activity at Elis.
The Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia took part in European Heritage Days 2026, under the theme “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”, with the educational programme “Saving Monuments”. A total of 60 students participated in parallel activities at the archaeological sites of Olympia and Elis and at Chlemoutsi Castle, discovering aspects of archaeological research and monument protection.

Experiencing archaeology at Elis
At Elis, 32 students in the second and third years of the 3rd Junior High School of Amaliada joined an educational activity introducing archaeology and the basic principles of excavation. An introductory discussion was followed by active participation: through dialogue and a simulated excavation, students explored the value of archaeological finds and the need to protect them.

From excavation to documentation
Working together with tools in hand, the students took part in the specially prepared mock excavation. The photographs capture moments of discovery and careful uncovering, recording educational material and learning about surveying equipment. The activity highlighted how archaeological research combines observation, documentation and teamwork.
This hands-on approach encouraged observation, critical thinking and cooperation, linking an understanding of the past with responsibility for its preservation. Protecting cultural heritage became an opportunity for learning, participation and reflection.
